Apple Hill Orchards

Apple Hill near Placerville. Pick apples, watch cider pressed, and rate the warm farm-stand treats.

Spend a fall morning driving between the family farms of Apple Hill in the Sierra foothills. Pick your own apples, watch cider being pressed, and split a warm apple fritter, a cider doughnut and a slice of pie from three different farms. Rate each out of ten, and the winner is the farm you come back to next year. The photo to get: you in the orchard rows with a full bag of apples.

About this place

Apple Hill started in 1964, when a group of local ranchers banded together after a blight wiped out the area's pear orchards and they replanted with apples. Today there are more than 50 farms, along with wineries, Christmas tree farms and bakeries, spread along the back roads around Camino.

Most farms are busiest from September through November. Fall weekends bring heavy traffic on the main roads, so go early on a weekday if you can. The Apple Hill website has a map of every farm and what each one is known for.
