Bike Around Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island, Michigan. Bike the car-free 8-mile shore loop, then share fudge on Main Street.

Ride the ferry to Mackinac Island, where you'll hear horses and bike bells instead of traffic. Rent bikes or a tandem by the dock and ride the flat shore road all the way around the island, stopping at Arch Rock. Then split a slab of fudge on Main Street, and each pick your favorite flavor. The photo to get: the two of you with your bikes and the blue water of the straits behind you.

About this place

Cars have been banned on Mackinac Island since 1898, so the shore loop, M-185, is the only state highway in Michigan without a single car on it. It's about eight miles around.

The island's fudge shops are so famous that locals call tourists "fudgies." Look for the Grand Hotel's huge front porch on the hill, and Fort Mackinac above the harbor. Ferries and most shops run from spring through fall.
