Golden Hour Around Devils Tower

Devils Tower, Wyoming. Walk the loop around the base at golden hour, then stay for stars.

Walk the Tower Trail around the base of Devils Tower as the evening light turns the columns gold. Stop at the far side and each count the columns you can see from one spot. The photo to get: the two of you with the glowing tower behind you. Stay after dark; it's a long way from city lights, and the stars are huge.

About this place

Devils Tower became the very first national monument in 1906, named by Theodore Roosevelt. It rises about 870 feet from its base, and its giant columns formed as molten rock cooled and cracked underground. Movie fans know it from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The Tower is sacred to many tribes; the Lakota call it Bear Lodge. If you see prayer cloths tied to the trees, leave them be. The paved loop is about 1.3 miles, short and steep at the start, then easy. Look for the prairie dog town near the entrance.
