Duquesne Incline at Night

Duquesne Incline in Pittsburgh. Ride the 1870s cable car up and see the city light up below.

Ride the old wooden incline car up the side of Mount Washington after dark. At the top, the overlook shows downtown Pittsburgh lit up where the three rivers meet. Each count the bridges you can see from the deck. The photo to get: the two of you at the railing with the glowing city behind you. Then walk Grandview Avenue to the other overlooks before riding back down.

About this place

The Duquesne Incline opened in 1877, when inclines carried people and freight up the steep hills from the mills below. It's one of only two left in the city, and it still runs its original wooden cars. A neighborhood group saved it from closing in the 1960s. Peek into the machine room at the top to see the gears turn.

Pittsburgh has more than 400 bridges, more than almost any city in the world. The fare has been cash only, so bring small bills.
