Sunset at Hopi Point, Grand Canyon

Hopi Point on the Grand Canyon's South Rim. Ride the shuttle out and watch the sunset together.

Ride the shuttle out Hermit Road to Hopi Point, find a spot on the rim and watch the sunset light climb up miles of canyon walls. Each guess which far-off butte will hold the last light, and see who's right. The photo to get: the two of you as silhouettes on the rim against the glowing canyon. Look for glimpses of the Colorado River far below.

About this place

Hopi Point juts out into the canyon, so it has one of the widest views on the South Rim, with the Colorado River showing in several places. Many of the buttes have names like Isis Temple and Shiva Temple, given by geologists in the 1880s who thought the rock towers looked like ancient temples.

From March through November, Hermit Road is closed to private cars and the free Red Route shuttle runs from the Hermit Road Transfer Station. Buses keep running after sunset. In winter you can drive yourself. Get there early to claim a spot, and bring a jacket; it cools off fast once the sun is down.
