Hood River Pipeline Trail

Walk the catwalk on top of the old pipeline along the Hood River.

Start by the old Powerdale powerhouse and follow the trail upriver until it turns into a narrow metal catwalk running along the top of a giant old water pipe above the Hood River. Take a photo looking down the catwalk as it curves away upriver, then walk to where the pipe suddenly ends and get a photo of the end of the line. Each guess what happened to the rest of it before you read the answer.

Check before you go: weather and trail conditions

Poison oak grows along the trail, and the catwalk's metal grating can hurt dogs' paws.

About this place

The pipeline is the old penstock for Powerdale Dam, built in 1923 to carry river water down to the powerhouse. The pipe is about nine feet across, and the last 0.6 miles of the trail run along a catwalk on top of it. In November 2006 a flood on the Hood River tore away part of the pipe and catwalk, which is why it ends so suddenly. That flood led to the dam being shut down in 2010 and taken out, and the corridor is now protected by the Columbia Land Trust.

The trail is day use only. Watch for poison oak, cross the railroad tracks carefully, and leave dogs off the catwalk; the metal grating is hard on their paws. The cottonwoods along the river turn gold in fall.
