Mystic Pizza and the Drawbridge

Mystic Pizza in Mystic, CT. Share a slice, then watch the old drawbridge lift for a boat.

Share a pie at the pizza place that gave a movie its name, then walk down the street to the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. The old drawbridge still lifts for passing boats, so linger by the water until it goes up. Each guess how long it'll stay up. The photo to get: the two of you with the bridge raised behind you.

About this place

Mystic Pizza opened in the 1970s, and a screenwriter who stopped in while visiting the area gave its name to the 1988 movie Mystic Pizza, starring a young Julia Roberts. Movie stills still hang on the walls.

The bascule bridge was finished in the early 1920s. Big concrete counterweights swing down as the road tilts up, which is fun to watch up close. It opens on a regular schedule in the boating season. Mystic Seaport Museum, with its historic ships, is a short walk away if you want to make a day of it.
