Nez Perce National Historical Park at Spalding

Nez Perce National Historical Park near Lapwai. Learn the Nimiipuu story, then walk to the river.

Start at the visitor center and museum, where the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people tell their own history: life along these rivers for thousands of years, the treaties, and the 1877 flight from the U.S. Army. Take your time, and each pick one thing you learned that you want to remember and share it. Then walk the grounds down to the Clearwater River for a quiet moment and a photo of you by the water.

About this place

The park isn't one place but dozens of sites across four states, and this is its main visitor center. In 1877, several bands of Nez Perce fled more than 1,100 miles toward Canada rather than be forced onto a smaller reservation. They surrendered in Montana, just short of the border, where Chief Joseph is remembered for saying, "I will fight no more forever."

The Spalding site is also where missionaries Henry and Eliza Spalding set up a mission in the 1830s. Entry is free. The visitor center keeps shorter hours in winter, so check before you go.
