Paddle and Picnic

Suggested by Angie C.

Paddleboard and picnic. Rent boards, drift along the water, then picnic on the shore.

Find a calm lake, bay or slow river with paddleboard rentals and pack a picnic dinner. Rent boards, paddle out together, and drift for a while, watching for fish, turtles or birds. Then pull up on a quiet beach or bank, spread out the blanket, and eat with your feet in the sand. Get a photo of you on your boards, and another at the picnic. New to it? Start on your knees, and pick a calm, low-wind day. Wear life jackets, and check the weather and water conditions first.

More about this mission

Stand-up paddling comes from Hawaii, where Waikiki surf instructors stood on long boards with paddles to watch their students. It's much easier on flat water than it looks.

Balance tips: start on your knees, stand up one foot at a time, keep your feet hip-width apart and look at the horizon, not your feet. In most places a paddleboard counts as a boat, so life jackets are required. Go in the morning, when the wind is usually calmest.
