About this place

Rasmus Petersen, a Danish immigrant farmer, started building this garden in 1935 and kept at it until he died in 1952. He covered four acres with castles, bridges, ponds, a seven-foot Statue of Liberty and a concrete American flag, all made from rocks he found within about 85 miles of home: agate, jasper, obsidian, petrified wood and thundereggs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

The museum, from the 1940s, has a room where fluorescent minerals glow under black light, and about 40 peacocks roam the grounds. There's no set admission, just a suggested donation, and the hours change with the seasons. Pair it with a walk below the cliffs at Smith Rock State Park, just up the road near Terrebonne.
