Pumpkin Patch to Pumpkin Night

Suggested by Kali W.

Pumpkin patch, corn maze and carving night. Find the coolest pumpkin, then carve it at home.

Make a whole fall day of it. Pick a pumpkin patch with a corn maze, grab a warm drink (apple cider, tea or hot cocoa) and a treat, and get lost in the maze together. Then hunt for the coolest pumpkin you can find, one each. Take "pumpkin head" photos holding them in front of your faces, plus one with a scarecrow. At home, carve or paint your pumpkins side by side without showing each other until you're done, and roast the seeds. Turn off the lights for the big reveal and get a photo of you with your glowing pumpkins. Check the patch's hours, tickets and parking first.

More about this mission

Jack-o'-lanterns started in Ireland and Britain, where people carved scary faces into turnips and potatoes. When the tradition came to America, pumpkins turned out to be much easier to carve.

Carving tips: cut the lid at an angle so it doesn't fall in, scrape the front wall thin before carving the face, and let grown-ups do the cutting while kids draw the design and scoop. Roast the seeds with a little oil and salt in a low oven until golden.
