Skyline Drive Sunset at The Point Overlook

Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Watch the sunset from the ledge at The Point.

Drive the high road along the Blue Ridge at golden hour and stop at The Point Overlook. Step through the gap in the stone wall to a rock ledge a minute away and watch the sun drop over the valley. Each guess the exact minute it'll disappear. The photo to get: the two of you on the ledge with the valley glowing behind you. Watch for deer on the drive back.

About this place

Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with about 75 overlooks. It was built in the 1930s, much of it by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the stone walls along the overlooks are their work.

The speed limit is 35 mph, so give yourself time to reach The Point before sunset; it's near mile 55.5. There's a park entrance fee, and fog or snow can close parts of the road.
