Dark Sky Stargazing

Stargazing at the darkest sky near you. Lie back on a blanket and find three constellations.

Look up a light pollution map (lightpollutionmap.info works well) and find the darkest spot you can reasonably drive to. Pick a clear night with little or no moon, bring blankets, warm layers, snacks and something hot to drink. Let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes with phones away, then use a free sky app on its red night mode to find three constellations together. Try for a long-exposure photo of you under the stars.

More about this mission

Your eyes take about 20 to 30 minutes to fully adjust to the dark, and one glance at a bright phone screen resets the clock. That's why sky apps have a red night mode.

The Milky Way is brightest in summer and early fall, away from city lights and the moon. Some parks are certified International Dark Sky Places, with some of the darkest skies you can reach. Check a light pollution map for the nearest one.
