Stop-Motion Movie

Make a stop-motion movie at home with toys, then throw a premiere with popcorn.

Pick a small story (the toast escapes, the dinosaur has a bad day) and build a tabletop set with a cereal-box backdrop and a desk lamp. Prop your phone on a stack of books so it never moves, open a free stop-motion app, and nudge your characters a tiny bit between every shot. Shooting straight down on a flat scene is the easiest start, and LEGO or clay works great. Add a title card, then dim the lights, make popcorn and hold a premiere on the biggest screen you have. Get a behind-the-scenes photo of the set with the crew.

Stop-motion is how classics like Wallace & Gromit and The Nightmare Before Christmas were made, one tiny move and one photo at a time. Big movies use around 24 frames for every second of film. For a home movie, about 12 frames a second still looks great and takes half the work.

Tips: keep the lights steady (close the curtains so the sun doesn't flicker), tape your phone and set down, and move each character only a little between shots.
