Sunset Under Vulcan

Vulcan Park in Birmingham. Ride up the iron giant's tower and watch the city lights come on.

Ride up the tower beneath Vulcan, the giant iron statue on top of Red Mountain, and take in the view over Birmingham from the observation deck. Then find a spot on the lawn as the sun goes down and the city lights come on below. The photo to get: the two of you small at the bottom of the frame, with Vulcan towering against the sunset sky.

About this place

Vulcan is the largest cast-iron statue in the world. He was made from local iron for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis to show off Birmingham's steel and iron industry, and he's been the city's symbol ever since. He's the Roman god of the forge, holding a spear point he just made.

Look at him from behind: his bare backside faces the suburb of Homewood, a long-running local joke.

The small museum at the base tells the story of Birmingham's iron industry. Check the hours before you go. The observation deck can close before sunset in some seasons, but the park's lawn is still a great place to watch it.
