Kite Flying Day

Kite flying day. Fly a kite on a breezy day in an open park or beach; whose goes highest?

Pick a breezy day (about 5 to 15 mph is perfect), grab a kite, or build a simple one together from paper, sticks and string, and head to a big open park, field or beach away from trees and power lines. Take turns launching and see whose kite flies highest or stays up longest. Bring a snack and stay a while. Get a photo of you with the kite high in the sky behind you.

More about this mission

Kites were invented in China more than 2,000 years ago, and were used to send signals and measure distances long before they were toys. Ben Franklin famously flew one in a storm in 1752, which is exactly what not to do: never fly near power lines or in stormy weather.

Launching tip: stand with your back to the wind, have a helper hold the kite up a few steps away, and let the wind lift it as you let out line. A long tail helps a homemade kite fly steady.
