Old Cemetery Stroll

Old cemetery stroll. Walk your town's oldest cemetery, read the stones and find one life story.

Find your town's oldest cemetery (findagrave.com can help), often beside an old church or a big tree-lined one from the 1800s, and go in daylight. Walk quietly, stay on the paths, and give any funeral or fresh grave plenty of room. Look for the oldest date, a carved symbol like a hand, anchor or willow, and the most beautiful epitaph, without leaning on, rubbing or touching the fragile stones. Each of you picks one name, and over coffee afterward you look the person up and trade what you learned. Get a photo of the carving you liked best.

More about this mission

In the 1800s, many cemeteries were designed as parks, with winding paths and big trees, before cities had public parks. People came to walk and even picnic there.

Old stones have a language of their own: a willow means mourning, an anchor means hope, a broken column means a life cut short, and a hand pointing up means heaven. Be gentle with old stones, and never rub, clean or lean on them.
